What is your business worth?

A sector multiple applied to your profit, then narrowed by the five things that actually move a price. We show the working, and what a buyer would question. It is a starting point for a conversation with an adviser, and it is not a valuation.

The figures

Profit after adding back the owner’s salary and anything a new owner would not pay. What counts as an add-back

What moves the multiple

All optional. Each answer narrows the range, and skipping one leaves it wide rather than assuming anything.

How much does the business depend on you?

The largest single factor in what a buyer will pay, and the one most owners underestimate.

What kind of revenue is it?

Contracted beats repeat beats one off, at the same profit.

How big is your largest customer?

As a share of turnover. Concentration is always the question, whatever the answer.

Which way has it been going?

Over the last three years. The effect is not symmetrical: decline costs more than growth adds.

What are the premises?

For a leasehold business, the unexpired term is part of what you are selling.

Two figures and a sector

Most sale valuations for owner-managed businesses start from adjusted profit and a sector multiple. Enter yours and we will show the range and the working, so you can see which assumption is doing the heavy lifting.

Adjusted profit means your profit with the owner’s salary and any personal costs added back. It is the number a buyer will start from, and getting it right matters more than the multiple.

Then answer as many of the five questions as you like. They are the things that decide where in a sector’s range a business actually lands, and they matter more than the sector does. Why that is

Would you rather just ask somebody?
